Cross stitch and bead guides
Reading a chart, choosing the fabric and ironing beads, in plain words.
How to read a cross stitch chart
A cross stitch chart is a map of your fabric: each square is one stitch, and each symbol or color tells you which floss to use. Once you know the grid, the legend and where to start, every chart reads the same way.
Aida cloth count: 11, 14, 16 or 18
The count of Aida cloth is how many squares, and so how many stitches, fit in one inch. It sets how big your design comes out and how fine it looks, so it is the first thing to choose after the pattern.
How to iron Perler beads
Ironing melts the beads just enough to fuse them into one piece. All it takes is ironing paper, medium heat without steam and a little patience, and the same steps work for Perler, Hama and Artkal beads.
