Aida cloth count: 11, 14, 16 or 18

The count of Aida cloth is how many squares, and so how many stitches, fit in one inch. It sets how big your design comes out and how fine it looks, so it is the first thing to choose after the pattern.

What the count means

14-count Aida has 14 squares per inch, about 5.5 per centimeter. A higher count means smaller squares, so the same chart comes out smaller and finer. A lower count means bigger squares that are easier to see and quicker to cover.

Which count to choose

  • 11-count: big squares, good for children, beginners and anyone who finds small holes hard to see.
  • 14-count: the most common choice and a good first fabric; most charts are planned for it.
  • 16-count: finer detail without straining your eyes, a natural next step.
  • 18-count: small, detailed pieces such as ornaments and portraits; stitch in good light.

Aida, linen and evenweave

Aida has a clear grid of holes and is the easiest to count. Linen and evenweave have finer threads and are stitched over two threads, so 28-count linen gives 14 stitches per inch and 32-count gives 16. They look more refined but take more care to count.

How much fabric to buy

Take the finished size and add about 3 in (7.5 cm) on every side for the hoop and the frame. The fabric calculator works out both from the size of your chart.

Not sure? Stitch a small 10 × 10 test on two counts. You will see at once which size and coverage you like.

Questions

Which Aida count suits beginners?

14-count: the holes are easy to see, two strands cover well and most charts are planned for it. 11-count is easier still for children.

Is 16-count Aida smaller than 14-count?

Yes. With more squares per inch, the same design comes out about 12% smaller on 16-count than on 14-count.

How many strands for 18-count Aida?

One or two. Two gives fuller coverage; one gives a lighter, finer look.

What is Aida count in centimeters?

Divide by 2.54: 14-count is about 5.5 squares per centimeter and 18-count about 7.1.

Can I stitch any chart on any count?

Yes. A chart counts stitches, not inches, so only the finished size changes. Check that it fits your frame first.
