The formula
Finished size in inches = stitches ÷ count; multiply by 2.54 for centimeters. Linen and evenweave are usually stitched over two threads, so halve the count: 28-count linen over two gives 14 stitches per inch, the same as 14-count Aida.
| Fabric | Finished size | Fabric to cut |
|---|---|---|
| Aida 11 | 9.1 × 7.3 in (23.1 × 18.5 cm) | 15.1 × 13.3 in |
| Aida 14 or linen 28 over 2 | 7.1 × 5.7 in (18.1 × 14.5 cm) | 13.1 × 11.7 in |
| Aida 16 or linen 32 over 2 | 6.25 × 5 in (15.9 × 12.7 cm) | 12.3 × 11 in |
| Aida 18 | 5.6 × 4.4 in (14.1 × 11.3 cm) | 11.6 × 10.4 in |
How much margin to leave
Leave about 3 in (7.5 cm) on every side: enough for a hoop or a scroll frame and to stretch the piece for framing. A small ornament or card can do with 2 in; a large frame with a mat is safer with 4 in.
How many skeins
A DMC skein holds 8 m of six-strand floss. Published estimates range from about 960 to 1,800 stitches per skein on 14-count with two strands, depending on how you stitch and how much you trim. Pixelplan plans on the low end plus 10%, because running out halfway can mean a new dye lot that shows.
| Count | Stitches per skein |
|---|---|
| 11 | About 750 |
| 14 | About 960 |
| 16 | About 1,100 |
| 18 | About 1,230 |
With three strands, plan on two thirds of that; with one strand, twice as many stitches per skein.
Choosing the count
14-count is the usual start. 11-count is easier on the eyes and good for children; 16 and 18 give finer detail in a smaller piece. The Aida count guide compares them side by side.
Questions
How do I work out the finished size of a cross stitch?
Divide the stitches by the fabric count to get inches, then multiply by 2.54 for centimeters. 140 stitches on 14-count is 10 in, about 25.4 cm.
How much fabric should I buy?
The finished size plus 3 in (7.5 cm) on each side, so 6 in (15 cm) more in each direction.
How many stitches does one skein make?
On 14-count with two strands, estimates run from about 960 to 1,800. The calculator plans on about 960 plus 10% so you don't run short.
What does 28 over 2 mean?
28-count linen stitched over two threads: each cross covers two threads each way, which gives 14 stitches per inch, the same size as 14-count Aida.
Do more strands use more floss?
Yes, roughly in proportion: three strands use about one and a half times as much as two, and one strand about half.
